Casual Rex vs. Predator

Ran into my old pal Casual Rex recently. Kind of worried about that guy. He gets drunk and picks fights with some pretty tough customers.
And here's something I did way back in first year of College, on the first day actually. Fall 2005 we're talking. We were supposed to do a self portrait of ourselves at our creative peak. I seem to remember being told I had missed the point of the exercise. Had forgotten all about it until I was googling a band and the first thing that came up was their MySpace, and I was like I had one of those once upon a time. Remember when that was a thing? Turns out its still there, so I took a trip down memory lane, and came across this. The hat I'm holding kinda looks like a blob eh...

Scud! the disposable assassin

One of my favourite books, comic, or otherwise, is Scud: the disposable assassin. I call it a book because I have the complete story in one big volume, although it was really a monthly comic book title. It's odd that when it was all said and done it came together as well as it did all things considered. The bulk of it was done back in the 90's, and was written in a style that seemed to cater to the fact that writer and artist, Rob Schrab seemed to want to draw whatever he wanted from issue to issue. So he just shifted the story drastically towards whatever subject matter tickled his fancy. I think that's one of the reasons I liked it so much. It was pretty popular in the 90's to the point Oliver Stone wanted to make a movie out of it. As the story goes Schrab was getting pretty depressed on the direction they wanted to take with the movie. Concerned they would fuck up his baby, he pulled the plug on the film and stopped doing the comic. Not before writing himself into one hell of a corner though. Over a decade went by, before he decided to give Scud a conclusion, and somehow it really worked.
For those of you not versed with the story, the basic premise is pretty awesome. In the near future, after the rapture has taken place, a company called Scudco offers you the service of robot assassins conveniently available out of vending machines. You give the Scud his target, which he kills and promptly self destructs. Our hero, a Scud robot is assigned to kill a a crazy monster named Jeff (it's a girl monster). While on his mission Scud pops into the washroom where he notices in the mirror the warning label on his back about self destructing. Not wanting to blow up, Scud Seriously injures Jeff instead of killing her, and puts her up in the hospital on life support. Now he has to take on missions in order to pay the mounting hospital bills.
I actually drew these a long while ago when I first read the full book. Only found them recently, so I decided to ink and colour them. I drew Scud with his loner arm, that he has while his robot arm is in the shop. That there is his sidekick Drywall. He's my favourite. Wish I'd drawn him with his piranha gun. Maybe I'll do that some other time. He's like this sack dude with zippers all over him with these arms that come up with stuff from this weird storage dimension inside of him.

One other thing that I thought was pretty cool about Scud, that's sadly not included in the big book I've got, was with the issues he used to have "suggested voice talents" for the characters. So if you wanted to, you could imagine that actors voice as you read the dialogue. Recommended voice talent for Scud was John Malkovich.

Bebop & Rocksteady

So I've been doing a lot of drawing for concept artwork for this idea I've had for a while. I got to the point where I had to design the villain's henchmen. Really wanted to get them right. Got me to thinking, who are my favorite henchmen.
I think the answer is pretty obvious when you think about it. It's like folks will always ask you who was your favorite Ninja Turtle? (Michealangelo, for the record. The party dude aspect always appealed to me.). Everyone's got a thought out answer that is in someway telling about how they see themselves in this world. But great villains are what really make it for me, and Bebop and Rocksteady where definitely that. Cooler than Shredder for sure.

My twin brother Nick and I had a pretty sweet Ninja turtles toy collection growing up. It was kind of one of those deals where while it was both of our collection, some toys kinda belonged more to one of us though. Just like Michelangelo was mine, and Leonardo was his (Nick's a Leonardo for sure), Bebop was mine and Rocksteady was his. The rest could vary, but when we would play Turtles, those where the 4 figures we'd each control respectively.

Anyways, back to drawing.

Smash Brothers

Hey folks,

So my buddy Scott recently commissioned a piece from me, and here it be:
So those of you that played Smash Bros. growing up will know what's up here. Ya got your 4 secret characters from Smash brothers duking it out on top of the StarFox ship, which is Scott's favorite level, and probably the coolest one in my opinion too. I had a lot of fun with this. I really like taking characters and putting them into my own style.

Figured I'd give you a closer look at the characters. I didn't really now much about Ness starting this off. I never really played earthbound as a kid, but looking at him i wanted to give him a more bad ass look that fit with my style. As soon as I found out he uses a baseball bat I figured i needed to work that in. So i got him here doing his best Mickey Mantle impersonation much to the dismay of Jiggly Puff. Poor Jiggly Puff, but she's so close to the shape of a baseball I had to do it. I don't think any of the other characters would've looked that good being batted out of the park. With her I really wanted to make her my own so I made her a lot more anatomical with a more organic shape. And I had to add the bow. Not sure if Jiggly Puff has teeth, but she does now.
Luigi was easy enough cuz I pretty much just used the design from when I did my take on Mario way back when. Captain Falcon I decided I needed to make use of the Falcon Punch seeing as I love doing fire effects as well as drawing characters throwing punches. Naturally Luigi wants no part of that, and is getting his plumber self out of the line of fire.
I also need to thank my buddy Steve and the folks at Canvas Pop for doing such a great job with the printing onto canvas. I did everything digitally, but it looks painted on there. I was quite impressed. They're definitely getting some return business. There are some shots of the print itself on Scott's wall. there's me there in front of it, a little lacking of sleep, but happy to see it up. If anybody is interested in purchasing a print of this, or any of my stuff let me know. Prices would vary depending on size. I'm also looking to do some more commissions. So if you've got an idea in your brain that needs to be put into visual terms drop me a line.

Spider-man!

So a while back I said I'd put up some more Spider-man characters.

So here's a few. I wanted to do Spider-man so he looked like a teenager. I'd say the one I'm the happiest with is Carnage with Doc Oc second. I decided to make him tubby. He's a scientist right. Just because he's also a super-villain doesn't mean he's got to be jacked. Anyway, if they came to me and said "Hey Fysh, we want you to do design characters for a new Spider-man cartoon" that's what it would look like.

So for a while there I kept mentioning this big project I've been working on. I figured I'd give you a little sneak peek. I'm gonna start pitching the show idea around soon, so maybe if I get lucky you'll be seeing "The Breakfast Serials" on a TV set near you sometime soon. That's all you get from that for now though.

A while back a friend asked me to draw Totoro for her. I tried to make the little girl look like her. Dunno if she thinks it looks like her but she seemed to like the drawing, and I had fun drawing Totoro. I think me and Totoro would get along pretty well.

Hey it's my old friend Casual Rex. I think me and him need to hang out more often. He's pretty cool.

Stuff for the family

Hey folks,

Here's some stuff I've colored up over the last little bit.

This one I did for my Grandpa. He likes the political cartoons in the economist so I figured this would be a good one for him. I alkways liked Uncle Same as a character, aswell as the whole Donkey and Elephant personifying the political parties in the states.

This one I did for my Grandma. She loves birds, and also enjoys a good hockey game now and then.

This one I did up for my Dad. When I was younger he used to read a lot of Terry Pratchett and stuff like that, so I figured this would be up his alley.

A friend of mine asked if I could draw up a Wonder Woman for her, so this is what i drew at work the other day. Initially I had her towing off a random burglar type with her golden lasso, but a buddy of mine suggested it would be funnier if she was messing with Aquaman. I agreed.

So folks have been asking me if I got anymore Shark Riders in the works. The answer is yes. Lots more Shark riders, hopefully to be posted soon. Also probably some layouts as well. Stay tuned.

New Years day

Happy new years all!

So I feel like this is going to be a very good year, especially on the drawing front. I still had a few drawings I found while going through my old hard drive that I wanted to share with you before I dive into the recent stuff. So here they are.

So I figured given how most people are probably feeling today this would be a good one to start with. I drew this guy a while ago, I think the first day I got my cintiq actually. I believe I was calling him Mr. Wubz. This was around the time I really wanted to do that comic magazine (which I still think would be an awesome idea), and I think how much fun I had drawing this guy is what made me want to call it "La pacederme rose."
So everyone's making new years resolutions right now, to better themselves and try and realize some goal they've had. I think it's time I start working on one of mine. Maybe making it happen all this year would be a tall order, but I want to eventually own my own professional baseball team. Doesn't necessarily have to be Major League, I'd be happy with triple A, or maybe a Mexican or Japanese baseball team. Anyway, when it happens this is going to be the logo. So I've got that done, now I just got to accumulate millions of dollars to buy a team.

So a while back some musicians I know from Sudbury (who have since relocated to toronto) where talking about a new musical project they had in the works called the Nightlife. Will, they guy from the band, had this idea for an album cover with all these nocturnal animals hanging out in this night forest bar thing, and asked me if I'd be interested in doing it. So i did up these drawings of different nocturnal animals hanging out. Unfortunately this was around the time I started back at the studio so I didn't end up finishing these up, and shortly after I think they moved on to another musical project called Old World Romance which I quite enjoy. I still was really happy with how these guys turned out and always thought it was a shame nothing came of it. I think the bats are my favorite, although honorable mention goes to the raccoons, just cuz I love raccoons so much.

Lastly here's a drawing I did of Rhino that I had completely forgotten about. Kind of makes me want to do Spidey and all the other villains too, so maybe that'll happen sometime soon. Rhino was always one of my favorites though.

Anyways, hope the new year is treating you all well so far. Got lots more coming!

Adventure time!

What time is it?
Adventure time!

So a while back I was pretty much watching adventure time non stop. I did these sketches at work of Finn and Jake and the Ice King, but in my style. I intended to color them up, but then I couldn't find where I put them. The other week though while combing through old sketchbooks they turned up. I was contemplating giving Jake some tightey whitey's or something, cuz I thought since my style is a little more anatomical it was getting a little weird, but I decided I'd leave him like that.

The Ice King's my favorite of the bunch. I think he translated into my style the best. Kinda fitting seeing as he's probably my favorite character. Having a good villain always ups my appreciation of a show, and I think the Ice King is one of the best villains going.

So after finding those I had the urge to draw some more. I've got a huge crush on Marceline the vampire Queen so I figure I'd draw her next. She's a total babe.

Then there's Princess Bubblegum and Lady Rain-o-corn. I was originally going to do the Princess on her battle swan, but I found this picture of her riding Lady Rain-o-corn pin up styles and decided I'd rather do that.

Hope you enjoyed these, got a few more I found in those old sketch pads, as well as a whole swack of new stuff to come.

Phoenix

Hey, So I havn't posted anything in a bit. I've got some bigger projects pertaining to my ol' friend Rex in the works that I don't feel are quite ready for public consumption. But here's some other stuff in the meantime.

So this here is a peice I did for my friend Oleha as a possible Tattoo design. I always like doing my own take on mythical creatures, so doing a phoenix was alot of fun.

Next up, here's a sketch I did a while back of Wolverine fighting the Hulk, figured I'd put it up.

And here's a sketch I did a while ago with the intention of putting up on Sketch Blog, It's Perseus In case you didn't know, haning out with Medusa's head.

First post

So it's my first post, so I figured I'd start off with my demo reel.

Most of it's from the last show I worked on called Dex Hamilton. I did up my own version of the characters while I was working on it so I figured I'd throw that up next to it. I thought it would be cool to do them in kind of an edgier style, seeing as it's a kids show. I was kinda trying to go for a kinda 60's campy space show kinda feel.
Anyway, here's some stuff i've been doing more recently, I just finished this today.

In kinda keeping with the theme of my version of other franchises, here's how I'd tackle a Mario movie should they ever see fit to do another one. I kinda wish I'd done bowser a little different but other then that this is pretty much how i'd handle it .
And lastly for this post; this is a little something i did last week with the intention of using it for a business card.
